The Roots Party of Kenya has officially nominated Caleb Sunguti as its candidate for the upcoming Malava parliamentary by-election, following the unfortunate passing of area MP Malulu Injendi.
Mr. Sunguti, who brings vast experience from both the corporate and academic sectors, previously served as a Manager at Telkom Kenya Limited and currently lectures at the Kenya School of Government, Lower Kabete Campus.
His leadership record, both in management and academia, has earned him recognition as a people-centered leader with a focus on community transformation.
Speaking during his nomination, party officials described Sunguti as a committed leader who embodies the Roots Party’s pro-people agenda. They expressed confidence that his vision would not only restore dignity but also steer Malava Constituency toward meaningful development.
“Our candidate is a tested professional with the heart and capacity to serve the people of Malava,” the Roots Party leadership said in a statement. “We believe he represents the fresh leadership that this constituency needs.”
Sunguti pledged to champion initiatives that empower the people of Malava through improved education, economic opportunities, and social welfare programs.
He emphasized his commitment to listening to constituents’ concerns and working closely with them to bring tangible change.
The Malava parliamentary seat fell vacant following the death of Malulu Injendi in early September. Injendi, who had served multiple terms under the Amani National Congress (ANC), was remembered for his grassroots mobilization and firm political presence in Kakamega County.
His passing created a leadership gap in the constituency, paving the way for what is expected to be a high-stakes by-election.
Malava, one of the 12 constituencies in Kakamega County, is home to tens of thousands of voters, with agriculture, trade, and small-scale businesses forming the backbone of its economy. Key issues in the area include unemployment, poor road infrastructure, and access to quality healthcare — all of which are likely to feature prominently in the campaigns.
The Roots Party, under the leadership of George Wajackoyah, is seeking to broaden its national influence by participating in the Malava by-election.
Known for its unconventional political messaging during the 2022 General Election, the party says Sunguti’s candidacy reflects its shift toward grassroots empowerment and practical solutions for everyday challenges.
The by-election is expected to attract candidates from major political formations, including Kenya Kwanza and Azimio-affiliated parties. With ANC, ODM, and UDA all expected to field strong contenders, analysts predict a heated race that could test the strength of political alliances in Western Kenya ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Local residents have expressed mixed reactions to Sunguti’s nomination. While some see him as a fresh face with the academic and professional experience to drive change, others say the Roots Party faces an uphill task in penetrating Malava’s traditional political alignments.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is set to release the official campaign timelines and by-election date in the coming days. Until then, parties are expected to intensify grassroots mobilization as the constituency prepares for a crucial political showdown.
