Russian citizen in Kenya not arrested or deported  – Embassy confirms

The Embassy of the Russia in Kenya has dismissed media reports suggesting that a Russian national was arrested and deported from Nairobi this week.

In a press release issued on Saturday September 27, 2025, the Embassy clarified that Mikhail Lyapin, a Russian citizen, had been escorted by Kenyan law enforcement officers to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) offices in Nairobi on the evening of September 25 “to question him about his business activities in the country.”

The Embassy stressed that after completing the procedures, Lyapin “left Kenya in accordance with his previous plans” on the afternoon of September 26.

“Diplomats of the Russian Embassy in Nairobi provided the necessary consular and legal assistance to the Russian citizen and also made sure that his legal rights were not violated,” the Embassy report.

Contrary to speculations in some media outlets, the Embassy underscored that Lyapin “has never been an employee of Russian government bodies and does not work at the Russian Embassy in Nairobi.”

The Russian mission further stated that it has not received any official communication from Kenyan authorities “regarding any claims against the Russian citizen or his activities.”

The Embassy reaffirmed its readiness to collaborate closely with the Kenyan government on all matters concerning Russian nationals in the country.

“The Embassy is always open to constructive cooperation with Kenyan authorities on issues related to the stay of Russian citizens in the Republic of Kenya, including their compliance with Kenyan and Russian legislation, and will continue its work to protect their rights and interests,” the statement stated.

The Embassy also reminded Russian nationals in Kenya to register with the consular section of the mission, while encouraging Kenyan citizens planning to travel to Russia for study, work, or tourism to seek guidance from the Embassy.
