Peter Salasya, the Member of Parliament for Mumias East, has publicly questioned the political position of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), raising concerns about what he described as contradictions in the party’s role as an opposition force.
In a statement shared on his X account, Salasya said many Kenyans were beginning to question whether the party still represents the opposition or has grown too close to the government it is expected to hold accountable.
“Kenyans believed in you. They trusted you to stand firm as the voice of accountability, to question power, to defend the ordinary citizen when policies became too heavy to bear,” Salasya wrote.
He argued that public trust in the party could be weakening due to what he termed as mixed signals in its political stance.
“You cannot claim the role of opposition while appearing aligned with the very system you were meant to check,” he said.
“You cannot speak like critics in public and act like partners in practice. That contradiction is exactly what is weakening trust.”
Salasya further noted that many citizens are facing economic pressure due to rising living costs, taxation, and other financial challenges, saying the situation requires leaders to be clear and consistent in their positions.
“At a time when people are struggling with rising costs, new taxes, and tough economic realities, Kenyans need clarity, not confusion,” he stated.
The legislator called on ODM to openly declare its political position, saying the moment demands honesty and transparency from leaders.
“This moment demands honesty. If you are with the people, then stand firmly and hold power accountable,” Salasya said.
“If you have chosen a different path, then be transparent about it.”
He warned that failure to clearly define the party’s role could leave citizens without a strong opposition voice.
“Right now, it feels like the line between opposition and government has disappeared — and that leaves Kenyans without a strong voice where it matters most,” he added.
