Senator Cherargei calls out Raphael Tuju over self-abduction stunt

Nandi Senator, Samson Cherargei, has called out former Cabinet Secretary Raphael Tuju over what he termed a staged disappearance.

He said that the incident caused unnecessary anxiety across the country and damaged public trust in genuine security concerns.

Speaking during an interview on KTN Prime, Senator Cherargei said he was personally alarmed when news of Tuju’s alleged abduction broke, revealing that he immediately contacted the Inspector General of Police.

“When I heard that Tuju had been abducted, I called IG Kanja and top security chiefs to find out. We were concerned, because after seeing what he had gone through in that matter of Dari Properties Limited and the bank, I thought this was very unfortunate,” he said.

The Senator drew parallels with previous incidents, citing the cases of Diangui Kinyagia, who disappeared for ten days in July 2025, and Juja Member of Parliament George Koimburi, as part of what he described as a troubling and growing pattern of self-abductions staged for public sympathy.

“This reminds me of Diangui Kinyagia, who disappeared for 10 days in July 2025, and also Mheshimwa George Koimburi, a member of parliament in Juja,” he stated.

Cherargei commended the Directorate of Criminal Investigations for its swift response in taking a statement from Tuju, but went further, demanding a full public apology.

“CS Tuju, a former cabinet secretary, should issue an unqualified public apology. You can imagine the anxiety in the country. Only for him to resurface, saying there is a family that was in Kiambu that was hosting,” he said.

The Senator also warned that the trend is set to worsen as Kenya heads into a general election period, urging the judiciary to take a firm stance.

“There will be leaders who will self-abduct for public sympathy. We must stop this charade of self-abduction,” he cautioned.
