Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah has called for the resignation of Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, accusing him of allegedly hiring goons that disrupted a peaceful protest in Nairobi’s CBD on Tuesday June 17, 2025.
In a statement on June 18, 2025, the Busia Senator warned that failure for Sakaja to step down should prompt impeachment proceedings.
In addition, Omtatah strongly condemned the police shooting of a hawker during the protests, terming it a grave violation of human rights.
“Governor Sakaja must be held accountable for unleashing violence on his own people. If he won’t resign, the Nairobi County Assembly should begin impeachment,” said Omtatah.
Meanwhile, Senator Omtatah visited Boniface Kariuki, the hawker who was reportedly shot during the demonstrations, at Kenyatta National Hospital where he is currently receiving treatment.
Omtatah decried the use of excessive force against peaceful demonstrators and demanded accountability from both the police and Nairobi County leadership.
“It is unacceptable for rogue police officers to open fire on unarmed citizens exercising their constitutional right to protest,” said Omtatah during the hospital visit.
“This was a peaceful protest, and the government must act to end this culture of impunity,” he added.
