Senior Counsel Charles Kanjama elected the new LSK President

Senior Counsel Charles Kanjama has emerged as the new President of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) after winning 3,728 votes in a hotly contested election that captured the attention of advocates countrywide.

In the final results, Kanjama outpaced his main challenger, Peter Wanyama, who garnered 2,616 votes, while incumbent LSK Vice President Mwaura Kabata came in third with 2,086 votes.

The poll attracted participation from lawyers across the country, reflecting the weight the LSK presidency carries in influencing the direction of legal practice, professional standards, and public policy engagement in Kenya.

Kanjama now succeeds outgoing President Faith Odhiambo and is set to lead the society for the 2026–2028 term following what observers described as a competitive and issue-driven campaign.

During the race, candidates presented varied approaches to addressing concerns within the profession, including advocates’ welfare, safeguarding the independence of the Bar, strengthening adherence to the rule of law, and managing relations with State agencies. The campaign period featured spirited exchanges, with debates held both in-person and on digital platforms.

As he assumes office, Kanjama takes charge of a powerful statutory body that remains central to the defence of constitutionalism, the protection of human rights, and the advancement of access to justice.

The LSK also plays a pivotal role in judicial reform efforts and legislative review processes, frequently submitting professional input on matters of national importance.

Transition processes are expected to begin immediately, with the official handover to be conducted in line with the society’s governing regulations.
