At least seven suspects have been arrested and arraigned in connection with the torching of Mawego Police Station in Homa Bay County on July 3, an incident that occurred as the body of slain teacher and blogger Albert Ojwang arrived in his rural village.
Ojwang had previously been held briefly at the station before being transferred to Nairobi on allegations of publishing false information.
According to the Homa Bay County Commissioner, Moses Lilan, the police apprehended the suspects on July 6 and presented them at the Senior Principal Magistrate’s Court in Oyugis on Monday. Authorities sought to detain the suspects for 21 days to finalize investigations.
However, the court granted a seven-day custodial order, with the suspects remanded at Kendu Bay Police Station pending further police action.
