Seven dead, several others injured after matatu accident along Mombasa -Nairobi highway

Seven people died on the spot on Sunday December 7, 2025 in the morning after a matatu collided head-on with a truck at Miasenyi, Taita-Taveta County along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway.

According to eyewitnesses, the matatu belonging to Kinatwa Sacco was heading towards Mombasa and was overtaking other vehicles before colliding with the truck that was coming from the opposite direction.

Bodies of the deceased have been taken to the Moi Referral Hospital-Voi morgue. The matatu driver is among those who perished in the accident.

The injured have been taken to the same facility as police launch investigations into the cause of the accident.

Photos obtained by TV47 Digital show that the front of the PSV vehicle was destroyed, while the trailer sustained minor damage. After the accidents, both vehicles ended up off the road.

Confirming the incident on Sunday, the Motorists Association of Kenya (MAK) blamed the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) for its reluctance to upgrade the busy highway into a dual carriageway.

Meanwhile, the National Police Service has urged drivers to remain vigilant while on the roads during this festive season.
