Seven detained over violent clashes at Nairobi church service attended by Gachagua

Seven individuals are now in police custody following a violent disruption at Kariobangi North PCEA Church on November 30, 2025.

The suspects, identified as Charles Otieno Opiyo, Wilson Okoth (alias M.C. Otieno), Michael Mutunga Kavulunze, Brian Omondi Odhiambo (nicknamed “Bryo”), Reggy Opiyo Otwole, Elisha Otieno Ochieng, and Gordon Odhiambo Onyango, were all apprehended in the Lucky Summer area.

The incident occurred during a thanksgiving service for David Warui, the newly-elected Member of County Assembly for Kariobangi North.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was among the attendees when chaos erupted. Rival groups of young people began trading verbal attacks outside the worship center, with exchanges growing increasingly heated as accusations flew between the factions.

Officers initially attempted peaceful interventions to calm the mounting tension, but when dialogue failed, they resorted to firing warning shots.

As the situation continued to deteriorate, police deployed teargas which drifted into areas where worshippers had gathered, causing widespread panic and forcing many to flee the service.

Gachagua has made explosive allegations that the disruption was orchestrated by President William Ruto and Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, claiming they arranged for hired troublemakers while ensuring police would facilitate rather than prevent the disturbance.

These accusations have transformed the incident into a politically charged controversy.

The Nairobi Regional Police Commander, working with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, has launched a comprehensive probe.

Investigators are examining photographs and conducting analysis of recordings from the scene, with officials indicating that additional arrests may follow as forensic experts complete their technical examinations.

The seven detained suspects await formal charges as they appear in court today, with their fate depending on what evidence investigators uncover in the coming days.
