A bright student from Isiolo County is on the verge of missing out on her university education despite excelling in last year’s Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).
Eighteen-year-old Saafo Adam, who scored a Grade A–, has secured admission to Uzima University in Kisumu County and is expected to report on September 8, 2025. However, her ambition of pursuing a medical degree is in jeopardy as she requires KSh535,700 for the first semester, an amount her family cannot afford.
Although Saafo applied for financial support from the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB), she only received KSh205,000, leaving a deficit of KSh335,000. Her mother, Mumina Gedo, a small-scale trader who sells shopping bags in Isiolo Town, cannot raise the balance.
The situation is worsened by the fact that she is also supporting another child studying at Machakos University.
Saafo has expressed that her greatest dream is to become a doctor, uplift her community, and inspire other girls from marginalized regions. She fears, however, that without urgent financial help, she may never step into a university lecture hall.
Her mother, who has already exhausted all possible means of support, admits that the family is overwhelmed. She says her daughter has worked tirelessly despite daily struggles, and it pains her to watch the opportunity slip away because of money.
Former teachers and members of the community describe Saafo as hardworking, disciplined, and resilient. They believe she symbolizes the hope of many bright but needy girls from marginalized counties who aspire to change their lives and communities through education.
Local leaders and education stakeholders are being called upon to intervene so that Saafo does not miss her chance to pursue higher education.
