Police in Kakamega are investigating an incident that has left residents in shock and raised fresh concerns over rising cases of domestic violence and insecurity in the town.
In a bizarre case in Makaburini area, on the outskirts of Kakamega Town, a man is reported to have killed his wife following a domestic fight before carrying her body to the mortuary without anyone’s knowledge.
“We are surprised by news that one of us here killed his wife and took her to the mortuary by himself. The two have had unending fights all the time,” said Alfred Amambia, an area elder.
“The husband, Kassim Asman, started beating the wife at around 7 p.m. We heard her cries, and maybe she died last night. But because they fight all the time, no one bothered to go separate them this time. Now he has killed her,” A neighbour added.
Reports indicate that after the assault, the man carried his wife’s body to the hospital, claiming she had been attacked by neighbours.
He is said to have later registered her at the mortuary before leaving the body at the Kakamega County Referral Hospital.
Angry residents later stormed his house, baying for his blood, but did not find him. They instead threw out and destroyed all his belongings in protest.
Police have since arrested the suspect, identified as Kassim Wamatsa, a shoe shiner operating at Muliro Gardens in Kakamega Town, at Lunani village in Lurambi Sub-County.
The body remains at Kakamega County Referral Hospital mortuary as police continue with investigations into the killing.
