Kenya’s national men’s sevens team Shujaa opened their 2026 HSBC SVNS 2 third-leg campaign with an emphatic 38–7 victory over Germany on Saturday, March 28 at Estadio Nicolau Alayon in São Paulo, Brazil, delivering a clinical performance to strengthen their push for World Championship qualification.
Kenya produced an aggressive and well-structured display from kickoff, asserting control early and maintaining pressure throughout the clash to secure a convincing opening win of the tournament.
Germany struck first through Jakob Dipper, who crossed over and added the conversion for a 7–0 lead inside the opening minutes. However, Shujaa responded immediately and seized momentum with a series of quick tries that shifted the match firmly in their favour before halftime.
Patrick Odongo Okong’o sparked Kenya’s comeback with the opening try, followed by Vincent Onyala Owino, before Okong’o added his second. Onyala then completed his brace, George Ooro extended the advantage, and Denis Abukuse sealed the scoring late in the contest.
Nygel Amaitsa converted three tries while David Nyangige added another conversion to complete the scoring for Shujaa.
The result marks a strong response for Kenya, who arrived in São Paulo sitting third overall in the SVNS 2 standings with 32 points after the opening two legs.
A top-four finish in Brazil would keep Shujaa firmly on course for qualification to the HSBC SVNS World Championship.
Following the win over Germany, Kenya are scheduled to face Belgium and Canada later on Saturday before concluding their campaign against the United States and Uruguay on Sunday as the tournament runs from March 28–29 in São Paulo.
