Shujaa ready to face the world as coach names squad for Hong Kong Championship

Shujaa head to Hong Kong with belief, momentum and a clear mission. With two days to go before the HSBC SVNS World Championship kicks off, Kenya’s national sevens side looks ready for the test ahead.

Head coach Kevin Wambua has kept faith in the squad that impressed in the SVNS 2 series, making just one change. Kabras Sugar scrum half Brian Tanga returns to the team, replacing the injured Chrisant Ojwang.

Tanga’s return brings experience at the right time. Having made his debut in Hong Kong back in 2016, he understands the stage and the pressure that comes with it.

Wambua is clear on what he expects. “He brings a lot of experience to the side. He is the kind of player you want in tight games and we expect him to make an impact.”

Shujaa’s performances have not gone unnoticed. Sponsors SportPesa have rewarded the team with a KSh 3.15 million bonus following strong displays in Nairobi, Montevideo and Sao Paulo. It is part of a wider KSh 40 million backing that has supported the team through their journey.

It is a boost, but inside the camp, the focus remains on the bigger picture. The core of this squad reflects the strength of the local game.

KCB provide the biggest share of players, including co captains George Ooro and Samuel Asati, alongside Vincent Onyala, Festus Shiasi, Floyd Wabwire and David Nyangige.

Kabras Sugar add Brian Tanga and Kevin Wekesa, while Menengai Oilers duo Denis Abukuse and John Okoth bring the physical edge.

There is also quality in key areas with Nigel Amaitsa’s boot, Gabriel Ayimba’s presence and Patrick Odongo’s pace offering balance across the squad.

Eyes on the job

For co captain Samuel Asati, the message is simple. Start strong.

“We know what is at stake. The focus is on Australia first. We need a good performance to set the tone and push for a top eight finish.”

Shujaa have been drawn in a tough pool alongside Australia, New Zealand and USA. It is the kind of group that leaves no room for slow starts.

The meeting with USA adds extra edge after Kenya’s 31 14 win in Sao Paulo, a result that showed what this team can do when it clicks.

All matches will be played at Kai Tak Sports Stadium, a new stage for a team chasing a return to the top level.

This is about more than one tournament. Shujaa must finish in the top eight across Hong Kong, Valladolid and Bordeaux to secure promotion back to the HSBC SVNS 1 in 2027.

For now, it is about showing up, competing and reminding the world what Kenyan rugby is about.
