Sixty-five arrested, including two MCAs, over deadly Ikolomani violence

Sixty-five people, including two ward representatives Akedius Liyayi of Idakho Central and nominated MCA Anne Mulwale are being held at Kakamega police station on allegations of financing hooligans behind yesterday’s violence in Ikolomani constituency, where three people were shot dead.

Speaking to reporters at Isulu police station, western region police commander Isak Mahmoud said officers had arrested 63 additional suspects linked to the clashes.

Meanwhile, three people are being treated for severe gunshot injuries at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital in Kisumu.

Twenty-three police officers have also been admitted after sustaining injuries during the confrontations. The clashes erupted after a gang stormed and disrupted a meeting convened by NEMA officials to discuss plans to relocate locals to pave way for a gold-mining investor a proposal that has faced strong opposition from residents.

Kakamega woman representative Elsie Muhanda and deputy governor Ayub Savula have condemned the incident and called for the suspension of the planned relocation.
