Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has pledged to adopt a one-year-old girl currently at Misuuni Sub-County Hospital in Makueni County, after her mother was tragically hit by a lorry and died on the spot at the Emali–Oloitoktok junction on September 24.
In a post on his social media accounts, Sonko said he is ready to take responsibility for the child, describing it as a blessing.
Sonko appealed to anyone who might recognize the child to come forward, but emphasized that if no relatives are traced, he is ready to provide her with a home.
“We are appealing to anyone who might recognize the child to please present themselves at the hospital to help in tracing their family/relatives, and if in any case her relatives will not be traced, as usual I will be willing to chip in and adopt her hapa ndio blessings hupatikana,” Sonko said.
He added that the body of the mother, who had no identification documents, had been taken to Kilome Nursing.
This is not the first time Sonko has taken such an initiative. In January this year, he adopted an orphaned three-year-old boy who witnessed the murder of his father. The deceased was walking his son to school in Mathare when thugs intercepted them, stabbing him to death in front of the boy. Immediately after the incident was reported, Sonko expressed his desire to adopt the child.
The former governor later announced that he had finally taken Baby James into his family and officially adopted him with the help of administration officials from Mathare.
“I thank God for blessing me with another son. Baby James, the child whose father was stabbed to death by thugs as he helplessly watched on a Monday morning in Mathare area 4 while taking him to school, will now be part of my family,” Sonko stated.

Also in 2014, Sonko adopted Satrine and Gift after their mother was tragically killed in the Joy Jesus Repentance Church terrorist attack in Likoni, Mombasa County.
