Sophia Maro, popularly known as Kiya, has been officially nominated as the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Party candidate for the upcoming Chewani Ward By-election in Tana River County.

The by-election is scheduled to take place on November 27, 2025, as announced by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

This by-election was necessitated by the passing on of former Chewani Ward MCA, the late Hamisi Deye, popularly known as Ndoeni. Deye died in a road crash along Malindi-Garsen Road in 2023.

Sophia Maro, who is the sister of the late ward representative, will now carry the UDA flag in the much-anticipated race.

Chewani is one of the key wards in Tana River County, and the by-election is expected to be highly competitive as various political parties prepare to field their candidates.

As one of the country’s leading political parties, UDA is keen on retaining the seat by nominating Sophia Maro and entrusting her with the responsibility of representing the party in the ward.

Preparations for the election are currently underway under the supervision of the IEBC, with residents of Chewani expected to exercise their constitutional right to elect a new ward representative.
