Kakamega Homeboyz marked their first match at Bukhungu Stadium since the passing of defender Silas Abungana with a 2-0 victory over Sofapaka in a SportPesa League Round 21 fixture played on Friday afternoon.

The encounter carried special significance for the hosts, who dedicated the game to their late teammate. With free entry granted to supporters, fans turned up in large numbers to honour Abungana and rally behind the team.

Homeboyz made a bright start and went ahead in the third minute when Peter Thiong’o powered in a header from Eston Omengo’s well-delivered free kick.

The forward’s early strike separated the two sides at the interval.

After the break, the hosts remained in control. Erick Okutu was introduced just after the hour mark as Homeboyz sought to protect their advantage.

Shafik Batambuze sealed the result in the 80th minute with a superbly struck free kick from the right flank that got past Sofapaka goalkeeper Brian Olango into the net.

The final whistle confirmed a deserved win for Homeboyz, who climbed to third place with 34 points after securing their ninth victory of the campaign.

For Sofapaka, the defeat left them rooted at the bottom of the table on 14 points, with only three wins from 21 matches this season.

Round 21 action continues on Saturday with five fixtures lined up before the weekend concludes on Sunday.
