Sports Ministry orders audit of stalled Wote Stadium project in Makueni

The Ministry of Sports is taking a firm stance on stalled sports infrastructure projects, as evidenced by a recent working tour in Makueni County.

The Cabinet Secretary for Youth ,Creative Economy and Sports Salim Mvurya , accompanied by Ismail Maalim Principal Secretaries from state department of Youth and Creative Economy and his Sports department counterpart Elijah Mwangi , visited the historic Wote Stadium to assess its long-delayed construction.

CS Mvurya expressed strong dissatisfaction with the stalled project, which has deprived Makueni residents of a vital sporting facility.

The CS directed the State Department of Sports to coordinate all stakeholders involved in the project to conduct a comprehensive audit and reconciliation of all relevant documents, including Bills of Quantities (BQs), work plans, certificates of completion, budget lines, and structural designs.

The purpose of the audit is to determine the reasons for the project’s stagnation and identify any potential malpractices. Depending on the findings, the government could take further action, including terminating the contract if the contractor is found culpable.

The Ministry emphasized its commitment to delivering world-class sporting infrastructure promptly to support Kenya’s sporting vision.

“Unjustified delays, shoddy works, and other forms of constructional malpractices within the sporting sector will not be tolerated,” the Ministry stated.

In addition to the stadium inspection, the CS presided over the 2nd Edition of the Wazo Youth Engagement Forum at KMTC.

The forum provided an opportunity for the CS to interact with young people, discussing various opportunities for their empowerment and socio-economic development.

He encouraged them to use social media platforms constructively and avoid engaging in misinformation campaigns against government initiatives.

The event was attended by senior government officials, including CEOs from the Sports Fund and Youth Fund, the Chair of the Youth Advisory Board, and top officials from the National Youth Council. Makueni County leadership, led by Deputy Governor Lucy Mulili and County Women Representative Rose Museo, also participated.
