Spotlight: Holy Dave shares how COVID pandemic opened doors for him in the culinary space

Kenyan food content creator David Muthegi, popularly known as Holy Dave, has come a long way from the gospel music industry to becoming one of the country’s most beloved culinary influencers.

In an exclusive interview with TV47 on Friday, June 20, Holy Dave opened up about his transition from the music industry, saying joblessness led him to begin creating food content.

“I was jobless, I won’t lie. Kuna hio time nilikua at a certain TV station, nilikua na gig pale we used to go around, tunatembea kwa mashule. Covid kugonga…” he narrated.

Inspired by his mother, his content creation journey began during the COVID-19 lockdown, with a video of him cooking liver, which quickly gained attention on social media.

“So I pulled a liver out of the freezer, nikaanza tu kupika kimchezo…nikasema yaani ile business school nimeenda nikasema this is scalability. Then the next day, I tried with some chicken,” he said, “Watu wakangoja nizubae, mimi huyo nimeenda.”

He then started collaborating with small brands that sold household products and food suppliers as he made his way up.

Holy Dave concluded by urging the youth not to give up and start with what they have, not wait till they have capital to venture into a business.

“Hakuna ku lose hope, and it’s not about capital…use what you have. Mimi nilianza na hio liver alafu niko hapa,” he concluded.
