Stima Plaza security guard shot dead during Nairobi’s June 25th anniversary protest

The nationwide protests marking the first anniversary of the anti-Finance Bill demonstrations turned deadly at Kenya Power’s Stima Plaza headquarters today, as a security guard was tragically shot dead.

Fred Wamale Wanyonyi, an employee of Hatari Security, was fatally wounded at approximately 4:30 PM at the Kolobot Road entrance of the building.

Kenya Power confirmed the devastating news in a statement, expressing profound sorrow over the incident.

“We are deeply saddened to report that Mr. Fred Wamale Wanyonyi, a security guard stationed at our Stima Plaza headquarters, was fatally shot at the entrance of the building at 4:30 pm this evening during the ongoing protests,” the company’s statement read.

Wamale was immediately rushed to Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital, but tragically, he was pronounced dead upon arrival. The statement further clarified that Wamale was on duty at the time the incident occurred.

KPLC stated it is working closely with relevant authorities to “unearth the circumstances under which the incident occurred.”

Investigations are now underway to determine who fired the fatal shot and the full context of this senseless killing.

Meanwhile the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) has reported eight fatalities and over 400 casualties nationwide in the 2024 Finance Bill anniversary protest .
