“Your emergency is not my emergency”: Akothee slams Christmas money requests

Kenyan musician and entrepreneur Esther Akoth, popularly known as Akothee , has called out what she terms as excessive and entitled money requests, particularly from men, saying the habit has become emotionally draining and disrespectful.

In a series of strongly worded posts shared on her Facebook page during the Christmas period, the mother of five expressed frustration over being repeatedly asked for money under the guise of festive greetings.

“If you want to ask me for money, go straight to the point. Stop hiding behind ‘send me Christmas’,” Akothee wrote.

“Am I Jesus who was born on 25th? Even on my birthday no one sends me gifts.”

The singer revealed that she had received at least 20 requests from men alone, a trend she said deeply annoyed her.

“So far I have received 20 requests from men. When did men turn into beggars?” she posed, warning that such behaviour would no longer be tolerated.

Akothee said the constant demands have pushed her to draw firm boundaries, vowing to expose anyone who asks her for money in 2026. “If you ask me for money, I am exposing you. Watu wafanye kazi,” she stated.

She further clarified that while she is a philanthropist, her generosity is structured and intentional. “My money is directed to the foundation. No side shows,” she said, adding that being charitable does not mean being used. “Being a philanthropist doesn’t open doors to users. You won’t use me.”

The outspoken artist also shared a personal experience to illustrate her point, recounting how a nail technician overcharged her while she was in hospital.

“No one does anything for me for free. I equally work hard for my money,” she noted.

Akothee lamented that people often reach out only when they need help. “No one ever calls to check up on me. I am exhausted of carrying people’s burdens,” she said.

Concluding her message, she reminded followers that generosity should never be forced. “I give when I feel like giving, not when I am pushed,” Akothee said, ending with a firm, “Merry Christmas.”
