Sudan has produced the biggest shock of the CHAN PAMOJA 2024 tournament so far, defeating Nigeria 4-0 in Zanzibar to take the top spot in Group D and eliminate the Super Eagles with a game to spare.

The result came after a ruthless and disciplined performance from Sudan, which capitalized on defensive errors from Nigeria.

The opening goal came in the 25th minute from an unfortunate own goal by Nigeria’s Leonard Ngenge, whose attempted block deflected the ball into his own net.

Ngenge’s difficult night continued just before halftime when his handball in the box resulted in a penalty, which Sudan captain Walieldin Khdir converted to make it 2-0.

Despite a few attempts from Sikiru Alimi, Nigeria entered the break two goals down.

Sudan, coached by Ghana’s Kwesi Appiah, sealed the victory in the second half with two quick goals from Abdel Raouf Yagoub.

Yagoub first scored in the 55th minute with a left-footed finish and then added his second just seven minutes later, sweeping in a fourth goal for Sudan.

Nigeria struggled to break down Sudan’s organized midfield and defense, and even when they had chances, goalkeeper Mohamed Abooja stood firm.

The resounding victory for Sudan, combined with Senegal’s 1-1 draw against Congo earlier in the day, has significantly impacted Group D.

Sudan and Senegal are now tied for first place with four points each, while Congo is third with two points. Nigeria, with zero points from two matches, is mathematically eliminated from the competition.

Sudan will now face Senegal in a top-of-the-table clash, while Nigeria will play Congo with only pride at stake.
