Super Eagles soar: Nigeria thump Mozambique 4–0 to reach AFCON last eight

Nigeria cruised into the quarter-finals of the CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 after brushing aside Mozambique 4–0 in a one-sided round of 16 encounter.

Goals from Ademola Lookman, a Victor Osimhen brace and a late strike by Akor Adams sealed a comfortable evening for the Super Eagles, who rarely moved out of second gear yet remained firmly in control throughout.

Nigeria signalled their intentions early, with Osimhen finding the net inside two minutes, only for VAR to chalk off the effort for offside. That scare did little to slow the Super Eagles’ momentum as they continued to dominate possession and territory.

The breakthrough came in the 20th minute when Lookman finished confidently to open the scoring. Five minutes later, Osimhen got his reward, ghosting into space and calmly slotting home to make it 2–0 heading into the break.

Any hopes of a Mozambique revival were extinguished almost immediately after halftime. Just two minutes into the second period, Lookman turned provider, teeing up Osimhen to score his second of the night and effectively put the contest beyond reach.

Mozambique struggled to cope with Nigeria’s intensity and organisation, with their attacking threat neutralised by a disciplined backline led by Calvin Bassey. Geny Catamo, one of Mozambique’s standout performers earlier in the tournament, was largely kept on a tight leash.

The Super Eagles added a fourth goal in the 70th minute when Akor Adams capped an impressive outing with a well-taken finish, having already played a key role in the build-up during the match.

The emphatic win extends Nigeria’s perfect run at the tournament to four matches and underlines their growing credentials as title contenders.

They will now await the winner of the clash between Algeria and DR Congo in the quarter-finals, while Mozambique bow out after a spirited but ultimately overmatched campaign.
