Supreme Court Judge Mohammed Kadhar Ibrahim has died, Chief Justice Martha Koome has announced.
In a statement issued on Wednesday evening, Chief Justice Koome said Justice Ibrahim passed away at around 4:30pm at the Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi, where he had been receiving treatment.
“On behalf of the Judiciary, the Supreme Court of Kenya, the Judicial Service Commission and on my own behalf, I announce with deep sorrow the passing of Hon. Justice Mohammed Kadhar Ibrahim, Judge of the Supreme Court of Kenya and a Commissioner of the Judicial Service Commission,” Koome said.
She described the late judge as a towering figure in Kenya’s legal landscape, whose career was defined by integrity, courage and a deep commitment to justice.
“The Judiciary mourns a distinguished jurist whose life reflected unwavering fidelity to the Constitution, service to the nation and compassion for the most vulnerable in society,” the Chief Justice added.
Justice Ibrahim had been undergoing specialised treatment in an intensive care unit in India before doctors advised that he be flown back to Kenya so he could spend his final days at home.
The 69-year-old jurist served on the Supreme Court bench and was also a member of the Judicial Service Commission, playing a key role in shaping Kenya’s justice system at the highest level.
His death has sent shockwaves through the legal fraternity, with colleagues and members of the Judiciary paying tribute to his long and impactful career.
Justice Ibrahim is survived by his wife and four children.
Further details regarding funeral arrangements are expected to be communicated by the family and the Judiciary in due course.
