Surrender is not an option – Sifuna declares hours after his removal as ODM Sec-Gen

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has broken silence following his removal as ODM Secretary General, declaring he will exhaust every legal avenue to contest what he describes as an unconstitutional ousting from the position he has held for nearly nine years.

Speaking hours after the party announced his removal, Sifuna made it clear that backing down is not part of his vocabulary.

He plans to challenge the decision both in court and in the arena of public opinion.

“Our party constitution places the responsibility on us to fight for ODM; and fight we shall, through all lawful means. Surrender is not an option for us. ODM is bigger than any individual,” Sifuna stated.

Sifuna didn’t hold back when addressing his exit, pointing fingers at what he calls the illegal installation of Oburu Odinga as the new party leader.

He claims the process violated ODM’s own rules and procedures.

“The current ODM party leader, Oburu Odinga, was installed unprocedurally and unconstitutionally. These shortcuts and legal edicts reflect the bad habits that progressive institutions and individuals pick up when they get cosy with Ruto,” Sifuna said, adding that just four months after Raila’s death, “Raila must be turning in his grave.”

At the heart of his troubles, Sifuna claims, is his refusal to support any plans within ODM to back Ruto’s re-election bid.

“My only crime is that I have refused and opposed any plans and schemes within the ODM party to support President Ruto’s re-election. This country cannot afford another five years of this expensive, divisive, incompetent, and disastrous Ruto misadventure,” he explained.

Sifuna painted a picture of his time in office as one marked by loyalty and hard work, defending the constitution and amplifying the voices of millions of Kenyans who believe in social justice and accountable governance.

He emphasized that his opposition to ODM’s alliance with Ruto began well before Raila’s death, and that the late leader understood and accommodated his position.

“My record speaks for itself. It is in public domain that my opposition to the party’s alliance with Ruto started long before the right honorable Raila passed on. He understood my reasons and accommodated them,” he explained.

As the longest-serving Secretary General in ODM’s history, Sifuna insists he will never betray the principles his late party leader stood for.

“I have served this party with loyalty, diligence and unwavering commitment because I had a leader in Raila who nurtured young people and young leaders,” he stated.

He accused certain factions of desecrating Raila’s memory, noting that “regardless of what political deals Raila struck with different regimes, he would never have allowed his beloved party to be turned into a mere appendage of state house where decisions are rubber stamped after instructions are received from the regime.”

Drawing on the fighting spirit instilled by his mentor, Sifuna declared that Raila did not raise cowards.

“Raila Odinga did not raise cowards; he didn’t teach us to run away from hardships or challenges, but to confront them head-on. We shall fight for ODM till the very end and challenge every illegality in the courts of law and the court of public opinion,” he said.

Despite everything, Sifuna maintains that he remains the duly elected Secretary General of ODM and a loyal party member.

“We are the generation that will reach Canaan, as envisioned by the late Raila Odinga, and nothing will stop us from this endeavor,” he concluded.
