Suspect escapes as police seize 25kg of bhang in Matungu

Police in Kakamega County are pursuing a suspect who fled on foot after abandoning a motorcycle loaded with bhang during an operation in Matungu on Wednesday, August 27, 2025.

According to the national police service, officers from Matungu police station mounted a roadblock after receiving intelligence from their counterparts at Kayonzo police station about an individual allegedly ferrying bhang on a motorcycle.

When the suspect approached the checkpoint, officers signaled him to stop. However, he defied the order, riding over a spike barrier that punctured his front tire.

The motorcycle came to a halt a short distance from the roadblock, prompting the suspect to abandon it and escape into nearby fields.

Upon inspecting the motorcycle, police discovered it was carrying 25 kilograms of cannabis sativa. Both the motorcycle and the narcotics were confiscated and are being held as exhibits as investigations continue.

Authorities have since launched a manhunt for the suspect, vowing to bring him to justice. Police further assured the public that operations targeting drug trafficking and other illicit substances will be intensified in the region.

In a statement, the National Police Service commended the officers involved in the operation for their vigilance and commitment, emphasizing that the fight against illegal drugs and illicit brew remains a top priority in protecting communities.

“The officers demonstrated relentless and steadfast efforts in combating illicit brew and drugs,” the NPS said.

The incident underscores the ongoing challenge of drug trafficking in Kenya, particularly in rural areas where motorcycles are often used to evade law enforcement.

Police have urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperate by sharing information that could help curb the supply and distribution of narcotics.
