Suspect in Mary Claire acid attack arrested in Kibera sting operation

The main suspect in the brutal acid attack on Mary Claire has been arrested following a coordinated sting operation involving police and a team linked to former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko.

In a statement shared online, Sonko confirmed that the suspect, identified as Elvis Opiyo, was apprehended after authorities “laid a trap” that led to his capture.

The suspect is currently being held at Kibera Police Station as investigations continue into the shocking incident that left the young woman with life-altering injuries.

According to the statement, Opiyo is alleged to have orchestrated the attack by hiring another individual to carry it out, pointing to a premeditated plan behind the assault.

The case has sparked public outrage, with many calling for swift justice and stronger measures to combat violence against women.

“I strongly condemn this cowardly, inhumane act. An attack on Mary is an attack on our collective humanity,” Sonko said.

He added, “Information is power, and today, that power has brought a dangerous individual to justice.”

Sonko also emphasized that no one deserves such suffering, noting that Mary Claire’s only “mistake” was choosing to walk away from a relationship. He urged unity in confronting gender-based violence.

As Mary Claire begins what is expected to be a long recovery journey, the arrest marks a significant breakthrough, with authorities expected to pursue further leads and possible accomplices.
