A suspected bandit was arrested as police recovered an AK-47 rifle, 12 rounds of ammunition, 2 magazines, and a police jacket during anti-banditry operations within the Kerio Valley region.
In a statement on Sunday September 7, 2025, the National Police Service reported that a multi-agency security team conducted a successful intelligence-led operation in the Kabetwa area of Tot, Elgeyo Marakwet County.
“The security team intercepted a suspected bandit and recovered one AK-47 rifle, twelve rounds of ammunition, two magazines, and a smoke jacket,” police reported.
The exhibits have been secured as evidence, while the suspect is in custody pending processing and arraignment in court.
Meanwhile, NPS commended the vigilance and dedication of the officers engaged in anti-banditry operations and reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing security within the Kerio Valley and other affected regions.
In addition, the service urged members of the public to support security operations by anonymously volunteering timely information through the toll-free numbers and WhatsApp.
The incident occurred a few days after a joint multi-agency security operation carried out in Kakapul, Baringo County, on September 1, 2025, resulted in the recovery of an AK-47 rifle along with 25 rounds of ammunition.
The illegal firearm was seized from the homestead of a known suspect, Korlima Mudang, also known as Kiptum Mudang.
According to security reports, the suspect managed to flee the scene during the early-morning raid and remains at large.
The successful recovery of the weapon marks a significant step in ongoing efforts by security agencies to curb the proliferation of illegal firearms in the region.
Baringo and other parts of the North Rift have long struggled with insecurity fueled by armed banditry and cattle rustling, often involving illegal firearms.
