Residents of Mariira–Ikumbi in Kigumo, Murang’a County, remain anxious after a suspected shallow grave that had raised public alarm was thoroughly searched but no bodies or physical evidence were recovered.
The operation at Keni village followed concerns from locals who noticed unusual soil movement in a compound and suspected it might be linked to recent disappearances in the area.
Police officers, DCI detectives and local administrators supervised the full excavation of the suspected site, which lasted several hours.
According to the area chief, the excavation was done completely, and no trace of human remains was discovered.
The chief emphasized that while residents had valid concerns, authorities cannot confirm any criminal activity in the area without evidence, and urged the community not to jump to conclusions until new information surfaces.
He encouraged residents to continue reporting anything suspicious for swift action, but warned against spreading unverified claims.
Although the suspected grave yielded nothing, residents say their fears are tied to multiple unresolved disappearances, including:
David Gitau (75) — A prominent landowner from Kîrîtû area, missing amid a land dispute.
Patrick Karanja (35) — Recently retired due to illness; reported missing by family.
John Njihia — From Gatuikira village, also missing under unclear circumstances.
Families of the missing individuals were among those who witnessed the search, hoping for answers.
Residents say the operation has brought temporary relief, but the unresolved disappearances continue to weigh heavily on the community.
One villager told our reporter that the area has recorded up to 10 missing persons over the past months, heightening concerns about safety and possible crime.
Security officials are urging residents to wait for conclusive investigations while cooperating with law enforcement.
They assured the public that the search will continue in other areas if new leads emerge.
