A routine patrol along the Mayenje – Bulanda Road, Busia county, turned into a drug bust yesterday after two suspects abandoned a motorcycle and fled into the bush the moment they spotted officers from Mayenje Police Post closing in on them.
The riders had barely processed what was happening before they were gone, on foot, leaving behind a motorcycle loaded with what police suspect is cannabis sativa.
It was packaged in two separate consignments and wrapped tightly in yellow cellotape, suggesting the drugs were already prepared for distribution.
Officers searched the abandoned load, secured the motorcycle, and moved everything to Busia Police Station, where the suspected narcotics are now being held for documentation and forensic analysis.
The two suspects, however, were fast enough to evade arrest and remain at large.
Detectives are now working to identify and trace them as part of a broader crackdown by the National Police Service on drug trafficking in Busia County, a region authorities have flagged as an active corridor for the movement of illicit substances. Police say investigations are ongoing and arrests are expected.
