Tanzanian music superstar Diamond Platinumz is experiencing a significant backlash from his fanbase following his public endorsement of President Samia Suluhu Hassan.
The Wasafi Records CEO is said to have lost over 100,000 Instagram followers within a five-day period as fans express their displeasure with his political stance.
His supporters are accusing the artist of supporting a government they believe is suppressing citizens demanding improved governance.
Social media campaigns calling for people to unfollow the musician have gained momentum, with disgruntled fans claiming that Diamond’s political alignment demonstrates a disconnect from the struggles faced by ordinary Tanzanians.
He posted on his Instagram page a message of condolences to families that lost their loved ones in the period of Tanzania’s election after being called out by many fans for remaining silent on the matter.
“God is the planner. In this may God grant us a reason with great blessings in our nation. May He grant us more peace than we had in the beginning, more love, more unity, solidarity, love for each other, and may He grant the souls of those who preceded us a good place in Paradise,” he wrote.
Other Tanzanian celebrities who received backlash for supporting President Samia are Rayvanny, Zuchu and Harmonize. Juma Jux and Bill Nas were neither spared as their businesses got destroyed.
