DCI detectives have arrested a suspect who posed as a taxi driver before stealing Ksh 500,000 from his customer in Lavington, Nairobi.
In a statement on Wednesday September 3, 2025, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) reported that fake number plates, mobile phones, several sim cards and a sisal rope were recovered from his car.
The robbery occurred on the night of August 8, 2025 when a man hired a car to drop him to Lavington from Westlands, Nairobi.
The arrest of the suspect, Fred Atandi Morara, followed a report by the male complainant, who alleged that on the fateful night, a random taxi driver hired to drop him off at an airbnb within Lavington had stolen his phone and transferred over Ksh 500,000 from his accounts.
According to the report, the complainant was leaving a social joint in the company of a friend, and was in the process of requesting for Uber services when the suspect who waited nearby beckoned and convincingly offered more competitive charges.
After dropping them off, he disappeared with the phone and managed to transfer the monies to different accounts which were later deactivated.
Morara was arrested operating a Mazda Demio fitted with suspected fake registration plates, KDQ 810B, with another spare set registration number KDN 993Q. Also recovered from him were assorted mobile phones, several sim cards and a sisal rope.
He has been handed over to DCI Dagoretti for further processing before arraignment in court.
