A primary school teacher at Kabojja Junior School in Uganda has been sentenced to four years and six months in prison after pleading guilty to attempting to sodomise an 11-year-old pupil during a school field trip.
Godfrey Muwumuza aged 43 years, pleaded guilty through a plea-bargain agreement with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, avoiding a potential capital sentence for aggravated homosexuality.
Attempted to sodomise
Godfrey attempted to sodomise the minor while returning from the trip. He asked the pupil for a torch and then grabbed the boy’s hand and guided it towards his genitals.
The attempted the same later on the bus, even following the child after he moved seats. The pupil immediately reported the incidents via a WhatsApp message to his mother detailing the abuse. This prompted her to alert authorities.
Muwumuza was initially charged with attempted aggravated homosexuality, which carries a maximum death penalty, and indecent assault. He later admitted guilt and sought leniency via plea-bargaining, which the court approved.
Chief Magistrate Ronald Kayizzi allowed the agreement, noting compliance with legal requirements.
The convict has fourteen days to appeal the sentence in Uganda’s High Court.
