Team Kenya jet back after historic sprint success at World Athletics Relays 2025

Team Kenya returned home to a warm welcome on Tuesday morning following a successful outing at the World Athletics Relays in Guangzhou, China.

The team secured three qualification slots for the upcoming World Athletics Championships in Tokyo and clinched a bronze medal in the mixed 4x400m relay, marking a significant achievement for Kenyan sprinting.

Speaking upon arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), team captain Boniface Mweresa, who led the men’s 4x400m relay squad in setting a new national record, emphasized the importance of early and specialized training ahead of the World Championships scheduled for September. “We are part of history now,” Mweresa said, highlighting Kenya’s first-ever qualification in the men’s 4x100m relay at a World Championship.

Athletics Kenya Senior Vice President Paul Mutwii, who headed the delegation, revealed plans to send the team for a residential training camp in Miramas, France, to prepare adequately for Tokyo. Team manager Kennedy Tanui also called on the government to provide full support and resources to ensure the athletes are well-prepared.

Kenya’s qualification came in three relay events: the men’s 4x100m, men’s 4x400m, and mixed 4x400m relays.

The mixed 4x400m team-comprising David Sanayek, Mercy Chebet, Brian Tinega, and Mercy Aoko-secured their spot with a season-best time of 3:13.10, earning Kenya its sole medal at the championships. The men’s 4x400m team also set a new national record of 2:59.29, finishing fifth in the final.

These performances reflect Kenya’s growing competitiveness in sprint relays, traditionally overshadowed by its dominance in middle- and long-distance events.

The team’s achievements at Guangzhou have raised expectations for a strong showing in Tokyo, provided they receive adequate support and training.

As preparations intensify, Kenyan athletics stakeholders are optimistic that these relay teams can build on their success and make a significant impact on the world stage later this year.
