The highly anticipated Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) national finals in Mumias were briefly plunged into chaos today after police deployed teargas to disperse an unruly crowd attempting to force its way into the stadium.
The disruption occurred during the girls’ final between Butere Girls and Madira Girls, forcing a temporary halt to the match.
The teargas, lobbed by police to control the crowd, affected not only fans in the stands but also the players on the pitch, causing a moment of panic and confusion.
According to eyewitnesses, a massive crowd had gathered outside the Mumias Sports Complex, eager to watch the boys’ final between St. Joseph’s Kitale, featuring the rising star Lias Jobo, and Musingu Boys.
The situation escalated when the fans tried to storm the gates, prompting security personnel to respond with teargas.
The second half of the Butere vs. Madira match was immediately suspended as coaches quickly guided their players to safety.
Calm was eventually restored, and security was significantly heightened, allowing the finals to resume. Butere Girls ultimately emerged as the national champions, securing their third consecutive title with a 1-0 victory over Madira.
In the aftermath of the incident, organizers have called for better coordination between security agencies and event stewards to prevent similar occurrences in future editions of the championships.
The event, which showcases the best of Kenya’s young sporting talent, was marred by a security lapse that endangered both athletes and spectators.
