Teen pregnancy crisis: 23% of pregnancies in Tinderet, Nandi County are among girls under 18

Nandi County is facing a growing public health and social crisis as teenage pregnancies continue to rise, with Tinderet Constituency emerging as the epicenter of the problem.

Recent statistics have sparked deep concern among residents, community leaders, and government officials, highlighting the severe impact on girls’ education, health, and future opportunities. According to data from the Director of Gender Affairs in Nandi County, George Otunga, Tinderet Constituency alone recorded 991 cases of early pregnancies in 2025. Shockingly, 23 percent of all pregnancies reported in the constituency involve girls under the age of 18.

The revelations were brought to light during a recent government outreach service delivery tour in Tinderet Constituency, led by Nandi County Commissioner Wilberforce Kilonzo. Officials expressed worry over how the high number of teenage pregnancies is disrupting the lives and schooling of many young girls in the area.

Nandi County has been flagged among regions recording elevated rates of early pregnancies, a trend that reflects the broader national challenges in adolescent reproductive health. While national figures show variations across counties, localized data in areas like Tinderet points to urgent localized drivers, including limited access to sexual and reproductive health education, poverty, and cultural factors.

Authorities are now calling for closer collaboration with government departments and stakeholders to tackle the menace through community sensitization, improved access to youth-friendly services, and stronger parental and societal oversight.

At the same time, they have issued a stern warning that anyone found responsible for contributing to these early pregnancies, whether through defilement, exploitation, or negligence, will face the full force of the law.
