The passing of statesman Raila Odinga on October 15, 2025 has made many people reflect on his political and personal relationships. Among those relationships is the close bond he shares with his daughter, Winnie Odinga.
Winnie Odinga is the fourth child and last-born daughter of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and Ida Odinga. Winnie Odinga is a Kenyan politician who is a member of Parliament in the fifth East African Legislative Assembly.
Speaking during Raila’s final funeral service at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University grounds on Sunday, EALA MP Winnie Odinga told President Ruto she is ready to ‘come back home’ and serve her people.
“They wrote for me a speech but I have nothing to say other than thanking the staff of Baba and President Ruto. The king is dead but long live the crown,” said Winnie.
Raila played an active part in Winnie’s life, and she frequently stated that in her many speeches while accompanying her father in his rallies and other public engagements. This showed supporters that politics was deeply rooted in the Odinga family.

This closeness took on deep personal meaning in October 2025 when Raila travelled to India for medical treatment. According to Winnie’s public statements, she accompanied him and stayed by his side in his final hours.
She was seen carrying Raila’s iconic white fedora hat from the airport and later handed it to her mother, a symbol to say that he has unfortunately departed.
At his memorial service in Nyayo Stadium on Friday, 17th October, she revealed, “I was with him in India when he took his last breath, he died in my arms.” Her words showed the public a glimpse into their relationship and showed how much Raila meant to her.

Winnie frequently referenced how her father taught her and others about leadership, courage and service. In her tribute she said, “I learned from him that love for country is not just in words, but in sacrifice. That justice must be pursued even when the path is lonely.”
Winnie once again eulogized her father at his final send-off in Bondo. She repeated her powerful phrase, “the king is dead, but the crown lives on.”
Their closeness humanized Raila Odinga not only as a politician but as a father. A previous video taken by Winnie has resurfaced on Instagram, highlighting the joyful and playful nature of Raila Odinga with his family.
Raila’s family and his supporters have a long and arduous journey ahead of them, dealing with the grief of a loved one, larger than life.
