The Law Society of Kenya marks Legal Awareness Week

The Law Society of Kenya held its annual Legal Awareness Week under the theme “the Justice Sector as an Enable of Impunity”.  The week was dedicated to providing free legal aid and promoting public participation.

The Law Society of Kenya held the In-house Counsel Public Baraza where the theme discussed was ‘Promoting Legal Awareness and Compliance for Sustainable Business’. The primary target for this baraza was small-scale business owners (SMEs).

“This Baraza was a crucial step in delivering practical legal aid to this vulnerable segment of our economy,” reads a post on X by the Legal Society of Kenya.

In addition, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) took part in the Week’s activities, offering legal education on prosecution mandates and the criminal justice process to the public.

The Baraza included in-house legal teams, law firms, and business organizations to discuss how legal compliance, corporate governance, and citizen rights intersect. The panel provided advice on legal registration, tax compliance (KRA), and governance. They turned complex regulations into accessible knowledge for the business owners. The forum emphasized that corporations play a crucial role in strengthening the rule of law by upholding transparent legal standards and engaging with communities to promote understanding of their rights.

The Week aimed to equip citizens with knowledge of their rights and responsibilities, and they ought to strengthen their trust in legal institutions.
