“They were not even my clients” Uber driver who was assaulted by four Nairobi women narrates what happened

A viral video showing four women assaulting an Uber driver and vandalising his vehicle in Kilimani, Nairobi, has reignited calls for justice after the driver revealed he was earlier forced to withdraw his case due to alleged lack of evidence.

The disturbing footage, widely shared on social media, captures the women hitting the driver, breaking his side mirror and damaging the rear of his vehicle as shocked onlookers watch.

The clip later became the turning point that led Chief officer- Citizen Engagement and Customer Service. Geoffrey Mosiria, to trace the driver and facilitate an interview for him to narrate what transpired.

In the interview, the driver explained that the incident occurred while he was already serving a client. He said the four women approached his car and attempted to force themselves into the vehicle.

“One of them opened the door and sat in the front seat, another tried to enter at the back and found my client already inside,” he said.

“They told my client to alight so they could use the car, but I refused because the trip had already started.”

The situation quickly escalated after one of the women allegedly broke the rear wiper. “When I tried to stop her, her friends came and started beating me,” the driver said, adding that another woman attempted to grab his phone through the window while a different one broke his side mirror.

He reported the matter at Kilimani Police Station and recorded an Occurrence Book statement (OB) , but the following day he was summoned to the station’s gender desk and asked to provide witnesses and evidence.

“I was told they couldn’t hold them without evidence. I didn’t even know the video existed at the time,” he said. “I was then asked to withdraw the case.”

Speaking after the video went viral, Mosiria questioned how such clear footage could be ignored. “This young man was assaulted and his car damaged. He deserves justice,” he said.

Mosiria called on the Inspector General of Police and the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) Kilimani to reopen the case, adding, “Justice must apply equally to all, regardless of gender.”

“We have over empowered the girl child, boy child anateseka, we need to see how we can control that imbalance.” Mosiria added

Former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko, taking it to his X account addressed the issue terming it unacceptable.

“I am calling for immediate justice for this driver and urge the relevant authorities to arrest and charge the ladies involved for assault and for damaging his vehicle.

Accountability must be enforced. I stand ready to support him fully in his pursuit of justice. No hustler deserves to be abused for simply doing their job. Justice must prevail.” Sonko said.
