Thomas Tuchel extends England tenure until Euro 2028

Thomas Tuchel has committed to remain England’s senior men’s head coach through UEFA Euro 2028, the Football Association confirmed on Thursday.

The German’s previous contract was due to expire after this summer’s World Cup in Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

Tuchel, who took over from Gareth Southgate in October 2024, signed an 18-month deal initially and quickly made his mark, leading the Three Lions to an unbeaten qualification campaign for the upcoming World Cup.

England scored 20 goals without conceding a single one and maintained their place among the world’s top five teams for over seven years.

Alongside Tuchel, his key support staff Anthony Barry, Henrique Hilário, Nico Mayer, and James Melbourne have also extended their contracts through to summer 2028, ensuring continuity across the coaching setup.

Expressing his satisfaction at the agreement, Tuchel said:
“I am very happy and proud to extend my time with England. It is no secret to anyone that I have loved every minute so far of working with my players and coaches, and I cannot wait to lead them to the World Cup. It is an incredible opportunity and we are going to do our very best to make the country proud.”

FA Chief Executive Mark Bullingham welcomed the extension, highlighting the manager’s influence on the squad.

“I am delighted Thomas has committed to stay with us through to the EUROs in 2028. He was the right person for the job when he joined us for the World Cup campaign, and has only strengthened his reputation across the qualifiers. We know the players are right behind him, and the togetherness within the group is there for all to see.”

Tuchel began his role as England head coach on an 18-month contract in January 2025, having won domestic and international honours with Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain, and Bayern Munich.

He was named UEFA and FIFA Men’s Coach of the Year in 2021 in recognition of his achievements, including leading Chelsea to European and world club championships.

His immediate focus remains on guiding England through the World Cup this summer, with the Nations League draw in Brussels on Thursday among his next official engagements.

The extension comes amid widespread speculation about Tuchel’s potential return to club football.

The 52-year-old has been linked with managerial vacancies at Manchester United, Tottenham, and Real Madrid, while questions linger over the futures of Pep Guardiola at Manchester City and Luis Enrique at PSG.

Despite these rumours, Tuchel’s commitment to England is now secured for the next two years, providing stability ahead of major international tournaments.
