The Director of Public Prosecutions has convicted three Kamiti Maximum Security Prison officers who facilitated the escape of terrorist inmates in 2021.
In his ruling at Kahawa Law Court, Senior Principal Magistrate Boaz Ombewa observed that the escape was clearly well-planned and required significant time to execute.
Robert Kipkirui Soi, Kaikai Talengo Moses, and Willy Wambua were found guilty of neglect of official duty, aiding prisoner escape, and organizing a meeting in support of a terrorist group.
Principal prosecution counsels James Machirah and Kennedy Amwayi presented fourteen witnesses and established beyond reasonable doubt that the convicts facilitated the escape of Musharaf Abdala (alias Shukri, Sharif, Alex Shikanda, Rashid Swaitar), Mohamed Ali Abikar, and Joseph Juma Odhiambo between the night of November 14, 2021, and the morning of November 15, 2021, at Kamiti Maximum Security Prison in Kasarani Sub-County, Nairobi City County.
The three escapees had been serving sentences for terrorism-related offenses.
The court determined that Soi and Talengo, both Kenya Prisons Service officers, willfully neglected their duty to prevent the escape of the convicted prisoners during the specified period at Kamiti Maximum Security Prison.
Wambua was convicted of aiding the prison escape and organizing a meeting supporting a terrorist group.
Prosecutors proved that on or before November 15, 2021, Wambua directly or indirectly facilitated the escape of the convicts who were lawfully detained while serving terrorism-related sentences.
He also organized a meeting among four convicted terror inmates at Condemned Block “A,” Cell Number 6, by enabling the transfer of Abdul Majid Yassin from Cell Number 2 to Cell Number 6, violating the Prevention of Terrorism Act, 2012.
The sentencing hearing is scheduled for January 20, 2026.
