White house explains Trump’s vein condition. How serious is it?

U.S. President Donald Trump has been diagnosed with Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI), a condition described by his physician as “benign and common”, following a comprehensive medical examination.

Chronic venous insufficiency is a condition that occurs when leg veins stop allowing blood to flow back up to the heart, causing it to pool in the lower limbs, leading to weakened valves in the veins.

In a detailed memo released by his doctor, Dr. Sean Barbabella, the findings confirmed that Trump is in “excellent health”, with no signs of serious vascular or systemic disease. The examination, conducted earlier this week, included multiple cardiovascular, renal, and systemic assessments.

“Laboratory testing included a complete blood count, comprehensive metabolic panel, coagulation profile, D-dimer, B-type natriuretic peptide, and cardiac biomarkers. All results were within normal limits,” the memo read.

An echocardiogram was also performed and confirmed normal cardiac structure and function. “Importantly, there was no evidence of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or arterial disease,” said Dr. Barbabella. “Tests also showed normal cardiac structure and function. No signs of heart failure, renal impairment, or systemic illness were identified.”

The doctor also addressed public speculation about bruising on the back of Trump’s hand, which has been seen in photographs and reportedly concealed with makeup, which he attributed to minor soft tissue irritation and frequent handshaking with the use of aspirin, which is taken as part of a standard cardiovascular prevention regimen.

Trump may now be forced to wear custom-made, medical-grade compression stockings to help manage the condition, and experts also recommend that patients elevate their legs at night and use lotion.

Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt had also confirmed that Trump noticed swelling in his legs, prompting a check-up with his doctor, who diagnosed him with the condition.

Although the condition is very rarely life-threatening, the US-based Society for Vascular Surgery said the condition can cause heaviness in the affected limb, as well as swelling and pain, whereas in some cases, chronic venous insufficiency can also cause painful cramps, spasms, and leg ulcers.

Earlier in April, Trump underwent his annual physical check-up, which revealed his health as “the healthiest president that’s ever lived”.

The report reaffirmed that the 79-year-old president remains physically fit, despite recent concerns about his appearance and energy levels.
