Trump orders full release of Esptein files in landmark transparency move

President Donald Trump has signed into law the Epstein Files Transparency Act, a landmark measure that forces the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) to publicly release a wide array of documents connected to the late financier Jeffrey Epstein.

Under this new law, the Attorney General has 30 days to make available all unclassified records in DOJ’s possession related to Epstein, including his investigations, communications, financial ties, flight logs, and internal prosecutorial decisions.

In addition, 15 days after the initial release, the DOJ must provide Congress with an un-redacted list of all “government officials and politically exposed persons” referenced in the documents.

While the law aims for maximum transparency, it also allows for redactions. The DOJ may withhold personal data that could identify victims, explicit materials, or information that might jeopardize ongoing investigations.

However, the bill explicitly bars withholding files merely because they could cause reputational harm or political embarrassment.

Attorney General Pam Bondi has confirmed that the DOJ will comply, pledging to “follow the law and encourage maximum transparency.”

The passage of the law marks a dramatic reversal by Trump. He had resisted earlier efforts, but faced mounting pressure from both sides of the aisle. Congress overwhelmingly approved the bill; the House voted 427-1 in favor, and the Senate passed it by unanimous consent.

In a statement on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump framed the move politically, suggesting the files could expose damaging links to prominent Democrats.

Supporters of the law, including victims’ advocates, hope it will finally shine a light on Epstein’s network and hold powerful figures accountable.

But experts warn that the carve-outs in the legislation may allow the DOJ to withhold significant portions, and it remains to be seen whether the public will get the full picture.
