Tuju pleads not guilty to charges of giving false information to a police officer

Former Cabinet Secretary Raphael Tuju has been charged before the Kibera Law Courts in Nairobi with giving false information to a police officer.

According to the charge sheet presented in court he is alleged that on March 1, 2026, in the Karen area of Nairobi, Tuju allegedly reported to a police officer that he had been abducted, information the prosecution says was false. He denied the charge and pleaded not guilty.

Through his defense lawyers, Tuju urged the court to release him on bail, arguing that the offence he faces is a misdemeanor and does not warrant continued detention.

The defence further asked the court to direct the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) Karen to issue Tuju with a P3 form, stating that he sustained injuries while in custody and requires the document for medical assessment and documentation.

In response the prosecuting counsel indicated that the DPP does not oppose Tuju’s release on cash bail.

However, it urged the defence to make a formal application regarding a motor vehicle allegedly linked to the matter.

The prosecution further told the court that the investigating officer (IO) must first establish whether the vehicle is being held as an exhibit before any orders can be issued, adding that the court cannot address the issue of the vehicle at that stage without a proper application.
