#TukoKadi: Kenya’s Gen Z turn mass voter registration into the hottest trend of 2026

Kenya’s young people are done being spectators. Armed with smartphones and a fierce sense of purpose, Gen Z have launched the #TukoKadi movement: a viral social media campaign that is turning mass voter registration into a full-blown cultural moment ahead of the 2027 General Election.

“Tuko Kadi,” Swahili for “We have our cards,” is more than a hashtag. Thousands of Kenyan youths are sharing videos and photos confirming their voter status, often accompanied by the phrase, while celebrating their official registration and readiness to shape the country’s leadership.

How did it start? A young Kenyan woman documented her grueling, nearly full-day journey to register in a video. Despite the frustrations of long distances, confusing processes, and personal costs, her message was clear: civic responsibility requires effort. Her video inspired many youths to push through the same inconveniences.

The movement has quickly gone beyond politics. Some young couples have rebranded voter registration as a “registration date,” walking hand in hand into IEBC offices and capturing the moment as both a romantic outing and a commitment to the country’s future.

Activists Ademba Allans and Hanifa called on influencers to unite and make the voter registration trend “massive and long-term,” pointing out that most unregistered Gen Zs are in universities.

The stakes are real. As the March 2026 mass registration drive targets 6.3 million new voters, the IEBC cannot afford to repeat past mistakes, and Kenya’s youth seem determined not to let it.

What started as a few social media posts has rapidly evolved into a viral civic movement, signaling a significant shift towards active participation among digitally connected young Kenyans.

The message from this generation is loud and clear: in 2027, they will be counted.
