Olusioni and Lotoyolon Women Self-Help Groups in Tepelekwi village embark on beekeeping

Olusioni and Lotoyolon Women Self Help Groups from Pokot community in Tepelekwi village at the border of Laikipia and Baringo counties have embarked on bee keeping with the help of Mukutan Conservancy formerly known as Laikipia Nature Conservancy that donated over 1000 beehives alongside offering bee keeping trainings to hundreds and these women can now produce and sell honey to already available market which in turn reduces the dependency in pastoralism thus generating income for themselves and their families.

Additionally, they have the opportunity to expand their skills and potentially employ others in their businesses, thereby contributing to an alternative way for economic growth in their community.

Speaking at the beehives plant around the conservancy, Mrs. Sveva Gallmann alias Makena, the director of the conservancy stated that they initiated the project following a series of discussions with the communities around ways of giving voice to women in a male dominated society.

The consensus was a strong desire among women for an alternative income-generating activity that did not wholly rely on livestock and would positively impact both farmers and pastoralists. She added that Mukutan strives to ensure that initiatives like beekeeping not only coexist with but also respect and celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the surrounding communities.

On her side, Mrs. Selina Kapkoi, a resident and beneficiary of the project stated that the issue of illegal logging had been rampant in the area as forest cover was on the verge of extinction due to charcoal burning to provide an income. With beehives, such cases are now in the past as the community has to take care of the forest in order to get high yields from the beehives which has a greater profit due to the conservancy giving them a ready market

Furthermore, this initiative is particularly impactful because it focuses on empowering not only women but also youths . By including young men and young women, the foundation is promoting inclusivity and demonstrating that everyone has the potential to contribute meaningfully to society and conflicts can be resolved peacefully
