Two arrested as police recover over 5,000 SIM cards,142 national IDs in major M-Pesa fraud bust

Authorities in Mumias East, Kakamega County, have arrested two suspects believed to be behind a wide network of M-Pesa fraud operations in the region.

The suspects, identified as 30-year-old Jonathan Ambwaya Kwini and 23-year-old Timothy Siloche Wesonga, were apprehended during an intelligence-led raid at Bomani Teachers’ Estate in Mumias Town.

According to investigators, the operation was prompted by actionable intelligence that led officers to the suspects’ hideout.

A significant cache of items linked to the fraudulent scheme was recovered during the swoop.

Among the seized exhibits were a Safaricom Mobicom phone used for SIM card registration, four Itel mobile phones, 70 Airtel SIM cards, 24 Telkom SIM cards, and more than 5,000 Safaricom SIM cards.

Officers also recovered 142 national ID cards belonging to different individuals, pointing to the scale and sophistication of the racket.

Both Kwini and Wesonga were transferred to Kakamega Police Station together with the confiscated items.

They are expected to be arraigned in court on Monday, 29th September 2025, alongside other suspects linked to similar fraud cases.

The crackdown forms part of ongoing efforts by security agencies to tackle rising cases of mobile money fraud across the country.
