Two children aged 2 and 4 die during a fire tragedy in Laikipia

A family in Chung’uti village, Muhotetu Location of Laikipia West Constituency, is struggling to cope with the devastating loss of their two children, a girl and a boy aged four and two, who died in a house fire on Monday August 4, 2025 in the morning.

The tragedy occurred shortly after their mother, Rahab Wanjiru, went to a neighboring shop, only to be awakened by distress calls from neighbors who alerted her that her house was on fire.

She rushed back and joined neighbors who had already assembled in a frantic effort to prevent the blaze, but their efforts proved unsuccessful as the fire grew wild, turning their timber house, where the two children were sleeping, to ashes.

Robert Mwangi, the children’s grandfather, described how he hurried to the scene and saw the house completely engulfed in flames, with no one able to enter to save the young children trapped within.

Emotions ran high in the town as friends and neighbors attempted to digest the horrible tragedy.

Muhotetu Location Chief Jane Wangechi Muturi and Marmanet Ward MCA Simon Kanyutu were among the few local leaders who were on the spot to witness the tragedy.

They confirmed that the two youngsters died inside the house where they were sleeping and were burned beyond recognition.

They urged the neighbors and well-wishers to help the young family during this tough period.

Meanwhile, the cause of the inferno was not immediately determined, but investigations have begun.

The two children’s remains have subsequently been transported to the Nyahururu County and Referral Hospital mortuary.
