Two DCP party youth leaders arrested as families demand justice

The families of two youths being held at the Ruiru police station in Kiambu County have demanded their immediate and unconditional release.

Wanjiku Thiga who is the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) national youth coordinator and Peter Karanja, the Kiambu County youth leader, were arrested separately under circumstances that close family and friends termed as cases of abduction.

A brother to Wanjiku, Simon Mwangi said he was disturbed to hear news of his sister’s arrest which he said was conducted in a manner reminiscent of an abduction while she was traveling using public means at Kamakis area in Ruiru.

Mwangi and Wanjiku’s younger sister Susan Njeri demanded that she be set free, terming the arrest as unwarranted harassment.

Earlier, activists, colleagues and friends of the two condemned the arrests accusing police and the State of violating the law.

They said if the security agents had anything against them, they should have summoned them rather than use unorthodox means.

Led by Mercy Nungari, a former nominated Kiambu MCA, they appealed to President William Ruto to end the brutal crackdown on youth with dissenting voices and instead listen to their grievances.

The activists charged that the move was a wider plot to intimidate supporters of DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua, which they vowed to resist.
