Two men sentenced to death for violent robbery in Maua, Meru County

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions has secured a death sentence against two men convicted of robbery with violence in Maua, Meru County.

Douglas Muriithi and Antony Mugendi were sentenced after the court found them guilty of attacking and robbing a woman during a late-night incident in Igembe South Sub-County.

According to court proceedings, the attack occurred on September 6, 2024, at around 11:40 p.m. in Maua Location.

The prosecution told the court that the two assailants, armed with crude weapons, confronted the victim, identified as Janice Gacheri, before robbing her of various items.

“They were armed with dangerous weapons including pangas, metal rods, and timber frames,” the prosecution stated, detailing the violent nature of the attack.

The stolen items included cash amounting to KSh 5,700, 87 kilograms of sugar valued at KSh 13,050, and 17 kilograms of onions worth KSh 850, bringing the total value of the stolen goods to KSh 19,600.

During the ordeal, the court heard that the victim sustained injuries, a factor that further strengthened the prosecution’s case against the two accused persons.

The case was prosecuted by Kelvin Gitonga, who successfully demonstrated that the elements of robbery with violence had been met.

In its ruling, the court noted that the prosecution had proved the case “beyond reasonable doubt,” leading to the conviction of the two men.

Following the conviction, the court handed down the death sentence, as prescribed under Kenyan law for the offence of robbery with violence.

The ruling underscores the judiciary’s firm stance on violent crime, particularly offences involving weapons and physical harm to victims, amid ongoing efforts to enhance public safety and deter criminal activities across the country.
